My Top 20 Projects of 2016

Happy New Years everyone. These are my top 20 projects of 2016, this aren’t necessarily the best but the projects that I found myself playing and revisiting the most.  I don’t care about your gripes or “This isn’t real hip-hop” bullshit.  Go debate your grandmother I don’t care. But without further a dieu here’s my favorite projects of 2016.
20.Gucci Mane and Lil Uzi Vert: 1017 vs. The World

Lil Uzi has been growing on me in 2016 and what he lacks in lyrical content, he excels in making good songs.  Mix that with a legendary artist such as Gucci and you get 1017 vs the world.  The two made a project that has been on repeat since it dropped.

Favorite Tracks: Changed My Phone, In 04′,Threesome

19.  Post Malone:StoneyImage result for stoney

If you would have told me last year Post Malone would be on my year end list I would have laughed in your face.  But I found myself constantly going back to Stoney .  The genre bending artist demonstrated how he is more than a one trick pony, who has more to prove.

Favorite Tracks: No Option, Deja Vu, Yours Truly, Austin Post, Feel, White Iverson

18.  Lil Uzi Vert: Lil Uzi Vs. The World

Image result for lil uzi vs the world

I loved Lil Uzi Vs The World. This mixtape is filled with fun tracks and catchy flows.  The replay value on this project is insane and the production is amazing.
Favorite Tracks, P’s and Q’s, Canadian Goose, Baby Are You Home, Team Rocket

17. Dave East: Khari Chanel

Image result for kairi chanel

Newcomer Dave East is a classic New York City spitter.  The album dedicated to his daughter showcases his ability . I thoroughly enjoyed it and can’t wait to see what East has in store for 2017

Favorite Tracks:It Was Written, Type of Time, Bad Boy On Death Row, Can’t Ignore

16.Kevin Gates: Islah

Image result for kevin gates islah

Kevin Gates has always been a great rapper. But his antics outside of music makes it hard for a lot of people to take him seriously.  But Islah proved that Kevin knows how to make a good album.  Kevin has released Mixtape after Mixtape and I was wondering when he was going to drop his album.  After Islah it’s clear that Kevin is more than what he puts on Instagram.

Favorite Tracks: Really Really, 2 Phones, Thought I Heard(Bread Winners Anthem), Pride, La Familia

15.  Rae Sremmurd: SremmLife 2

Image result for sremmlife 2

Sremmlife was one of my favorite albums last year, and Sremmlife 2 keeps the ball rolling. Sremmlife 2 only furthers the duo songwriting abilities and showcases their growth as artist.  Swae Lee and Jxmmi both improve on the rapping abilities and they get a string of guest features to complete this project.  I had no idea how they would top their first album and I was suprised with what I got.

Favorite Tracks, Black Beatles, Real Chill, Look Alive, By Chance, Shake It Fast

14.  Young Thug: Jefferey

Image result for Young Thug jeffery

Jeffrey is a drug-filled, intoxicating blur of a album.  I was impressed by how Jeffrey is able to flow on tracks and it still be fun to listen to.  The production really threw it over the top for me.  I have always been a fan of thug but this project blew me away.

Favorite Tracks: Harambe, Guwop, Wyclef Jean, Floyd Mayweather

13.  Danny Brown : Atrocity Exhibition

Image result for Atrocity Exhibition

Danny Brown has always been a very polarizing figure.  XXX projected him into the spotlight after years in the underground .  Atrocity Exhibition was a dark, haunting album and I loved it . The production was amazing and the way Danny approached the tracks is genius.  I can’t wait for his next album.

Favorite Tracks: Really Doe, Downward Spiral, Dance in the Water, Today

12.  Kid Cudi: Passion Pain and Demon Slayin

Image result for Passion Pain and Demon SlayinPassion, Pain, and Demon Slayin is a beautiful collection of songs, reassuring us that Scott was down for a while but he wasn’t out.  Cudi came back after a slew of mediocre releases , he finally released the album everyone knew he could release.  Many had given up on Scott Mescudi , but he proved why he is still one of the most innovative, influential figures in Hip Hop culture.

Favorite Tracks: Rose Golden , Frequencey, By Design, Baptized In Fire,The Guide, Surfin’

11. Madeintyo: Thank You Mr. Tokyo

Image result for thank you mr tokyo

Mr Tokyo, has an abundance of catchy , fun songs and they have they tendency to get stuck in your head.  After Uber Everywhere I doubted whether Tokyo would fizzle out or if he would come back with another hit.  After hearing this project, it was made  clear to me that Tokyo will be around for a while.

10. Vic Mensa: Theres Alot Going On

Image result for vic mensa there's alot going on

Vic Mensa’s There’s A lot Going On is one of the most honest and liberating projects to come out of 2016.  I found myself unsure about where Vic would go as a artist after the Innanettape but after hearing this project there’s no doubt about Vic’s placement in this music industry.  There’s a lot Going On proves his versatility and songwriting abilities.

Favorite Tracks: Liquor Locker, 16 Shots, Dynasty, Danger

9.  Isaih Rashad: Suns Tirade

Image result for Sun's Tirade

Isaiah Rashad had a lot to prove after he signed to TDE.  Isaih delivered a amazing project with Suns Tirade.  Isaih improved his flow and the concepts in this project.  Hopefully we won’t have to wait another three years for another project from Rashad.

8. Game:1992

Despite all of his antics in 2016, Game dropped a great album, incorporating classic G-funk and gangster rap into a modern album.  I was happy to see Game still has the ability to rap and make good songs.  I just hope he keeps all of the instagram antics to a minimal in 2017.

Favorite Tracks: Savage Lifestyle, 92 Bars, The Juice,True Colors/Its On

7.  Meek Mill: DC4

Image result for DC4

After a rough 2015, Meek Mill bounced back and dropped an amazing mixtape.  Meek improved on his flow and showcases his versality.  Meek shows us he can rap without blowing out the listeners eardrum, and switching up the beats from his previous projects.  I was skeptical at first, but I haven’t stoped playing the project since it dropped.

Favorite Tracks: On The Regular, Litty, Lights Out, Offended, Blue Notes

6.  Big Baby D.R.A.M

Image result for Big Baby Dram

I’ve never heard a full D.R.A.M. and I did not know what to expect.  What I got was a delightful mix of Hip-Hop, Funk, and Soul.  D.R.A.M. is more than a rapper but, a multifaceted artist who can’t be put in a box.Big Baby D.R.A.M. is an amazing album and I can’t wait to see where D.R.A.M. does in 2017.

Favorite Tracks: Wifi, Misunderstood, Brocolli, Monticello Ave, Password, 100%

5.  Chance The Rapper: Coloring Book

Chance’s follow up to 2013’s Acid Rap  was a gorgeous album projecting his faith and shortcomings .  His powerful message and positivity is what makes him one of the most interesting figures in Hip-Hop.  From the instrumentation to the live choir in Coloring Book, I was simply taken back by it all
Favorite Tracks: Angels, Smoke Break, Blessings(Reprise), All We Got, No Problem

4. Schoolboy Q: Blank Face LP

If y’all remember Travis’s debut album Rodeo was one of my favorite albums from 2015.  Birds is everything I loved about Rodeo and more.  With features from everyone from Andre 3000 to 21 Savage.  Travis shows everyone he is a force to be reckoned with.

Favorite Tracks: Coordinate, Biebz in the Trap, Goosebumps, Way Back, Pick Up The Phone

2. Kanye West: Life Of Pablo

Image result for Life of Pablo

Life of Pablo is a hectic project , from the album rollout, to the album artwork.  Kanye re-invented himself and the music and while I was ecstatic the project at first after multiple listens I grew to love the album and craziness behind it.

Favorite Tracks: Famous, Father Stretch My Hands Pt 1, Pt 2, Real Friends, Wolves, Frank’s Track

  1. Solange Knowles: A Seat At The Table

Image result for A seat at the table album artwork

Solange dropped the most beautiful project in 2017.  I don’t know where to start, from Solanges angelic singing, to the beautiful production, or the important message, I was just blown away by A Seat At The Table.  This was my first time listening to a full Solange project and I did not know what to expect, And what I received was the best project of 2016, and ultimatley becoming one of my favorite albums of all time.

Favorite Tracks: Cranes In The Sky, Don’t Touch My Hair, FUBU,  Mad

Passion Pain and Demon Slayin Review

Kid Cudi has had one interesting 2016.  The Ohio Native had a highly publicized beef with Drake and Kanye.  Scott also checked himself into rehab for suicidal urges, many were surprised at this decision and an outburst of support from many of his fans.  After his album Speedin’ Bullet to Heaven, dropped in late 2015 to terrible reviews and dismal sales, many people had given up on Scott Mescudi.  Did he deliver with Passion, Pain And Demon Slayin’, or is it another flop?

Cudi has returned in rare form on this LP. I haven’t been impressed by a Kid Cudi album since Man on the Moon II and I was skeptical if Cudi would ever make a good record again.  The instrumentation and how he incorporated all of the sounds and verses to make this project blew me away.  He structured the song like a film, like his first two albums which I have been waiting for.  The only gripe I had with this album was the song Releaser, I felt that it had no place on the album and that it could have been left off of the project.  On some of the tracks Cudi’s singing can be off-key and come off as lazy.  Despite my problems with the album I thoroughly enjoyed the project.

I was amazed at how Cudi crafted some of these tracks.  None of the features feel forced, they all feel organic and cohesive. Willow smith added an amazing touch to Rose Golden, and Andre 3000 gave two phenomenal verses on By Design, and The Guide.  The project was sort of long, I do wish it could have been cut a little bit shorter.  But none the less, Scott Mescudi took us on an adventure through his mind, in a beautiful in elegant fashion.  Passion Pain and Demon Slayin’ is the Kid Cudi album that his fans have been waiting for, for years.

Favorite Tracks: Rose Golden, By Design, Frequency, Baptized in Fire

Score: 4.5/5

4 Your Eyez Only Review

J. Cole is one of the most polarizing figures in rap music today.  After the enormous success of 2014 Forrest Hills Drive, Jermaine went ghost, staying out of the public eye with many speculating that Cole was retiring. One morning I received a text from a close friend of mine telling me that Cole had a album dropping next week. I was ecstatic as 2014 Forrest Hills Drive is one of my favorite albums ever. Did this album live up to expectations or was it just audio Ny-Quil?

The beginning track reeled me in and I was very pleased with what I got.  Smooth production and Cole was actually interesting the production was smooth and I was actually interested in what he was saying.  Immortal continues the streak of tracks I actually found pleasant.  I didn’t find myself bored or thinking about how much longer I had left in the album.  But when Deja Vu came on I loved the production and beat, but Cole doesn’t suite the track well.  I did enjoy the hook, but other than that I wasn’t impressed.  From here on out until Immortal I heard a slew of tracks that bored me to tears. Things picked up at the song Neighbors, the beat was infectious and I found my self singing the hook.  The way Jermaine was rapping was phenomenal I enjoyed the variety and lyrics.  After Neighbors I wasn’t impressed until the last track 4 Your Eyez Only.

I was let down by this album.  It was boring and it just didn’t keep my interest.  The dullness of this record had me struggling to pay attention.  At times I had to force myself not to fall asleep and pay attention.  I understand why people would like this album but I did not move me. While the message is great and powerful that doesn’t make up for the bland execution  of this record.

Favorite Tracks: Immortal, Neighbors

Score: 2/5

What did you think of this album did you love it ? Did you hate it? Let me know what you all think.  Stay warm out there and Happy Holidays! Be safe out there!

Starboy Review

After the Grammy award-winning album Beauty Behind The Madness helped him become a household name, many people including myself were wondering how The Weeknd would top his last album.  After the announcement of his latest album Starboy, I was impressed by the slew of singles he released.  The Weeknd has been one of my favorite artist since his first few mix-tapes, and I was excited for Starboy. Did Abel deliver or did he just get caught up in the hype?

Image result for starboy album cover

Abel experimented with his sound instead of sticking with the dark moody sounds of his mix-tapes.  I appreciated how he tried  to grow as an artist, but some of these songs were just god-awful.  Rockin’ and Secrets should have never made it onto this album, nor anywhere to be honest. The pre-chorus vocals made me angry, and the lyrics are less than terrible. Lana Del Ray is awful, I always try to find the good in artist and be open-minded but she is garbage, and her interlude is pointless.  Abel has some of the most cringe-worthy lines I’ve heard in recent memory. ” David Carradine, i’ma die when I cum”, “Got a sweet asian chick, she go low mane”,just to name a few.  I want to know who in The Weeknd’s camp let these corny ass lines fly.  Aside from the title track I don’t think Abel and Daft Punk mesh well, it seems forced and contrived.  The song with Future was boring and it almost put me to sleep. I have no idea what they were trying to go for here.  Future sounded uninterested and like he didn’t even want to be on the track.  The Weeknd does he thing on this track but I feel as though Future could have been left off of it.

Aside from all my gripes this was a very enjoyable album.  True Colors is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard this year.  Sidewalk is a great track and Kendrick Lamar gives a phenomenal verse.  The production is amazing throughout the entire project.  Abel is an amazing singer with great vocal range.  His voice demands your attention and is beautiful.  My biggest gripe with this project is it’s not consistent.  There will be a good couple tracks and then a streak of mediocre and terrible tracks.  But the good outweighs the bad and I enjoyed it.  I do wish he would have cut down some of these tracks the album is way too long.  Abel could have took off at least 5 tracks off of this to make it flow more and make it more cohesive.  I enjoyed this album overrall.

Score 3/5

Favorite Tracks: Party Monster, Reminder, Sidewalk, True Colors

How did you like Starboy? Did you love it or hate it? Let me know what you think. I hope everyone is being safe and getting ready for the holidays. God Bless.

1017 Vs The World Review

Lil Uzi Vert and Gucci Mane have teamed up for a collaborative mix-tape, to many fans surprise.  Uzi announced the mix-tape a few weeks ago and many people, myself included were anticipating this project.  After the release of The Perfect LUV Tape, i was left feeling underwhelmed.  Does Uzi and Gucci deliver or did they drop a dud?

Image result for 1017 vs the world

I was very impressed by what I got with this mix-tape.  The production was very hard-hitting and smooth, suiting both Uzi and Gucci very well.  On some songs the chemistry between the two can be off, making it seem as though the two weren’t on the same page.  While 1017 vs The World is a short project there is very little room for error. Both Uzi and Guwop flow effortlessly over the production.  Lil Uzi stole the show, Gucci rapped well on this project, but Uzi outshines Gucci.  I do wish that the tape was longer. Some of these tracks seem unfinished (Today!) , giving the impression that some of these songs were rushed.  I hated Secure The Bag it seemed misplaced and didnt fit the mood of the mixtape. Aside from those two tracks the rest of  this project was great.

Overall it is a fun mixtape to listen to.  It is short and precise, with very few errors.  This was a great follow up to Uzi’s Pefect LUV Tape which i thought was Mediocre, and Gucci’s Free Bricks 2 with Future which I thought was phenomenol .  I am excited to hear more from these two in the future.  Hopefully we get another collaborative tape from these two, they make a great duo.

Favorite Tracks: Changed My Phone, Blonde Briditte, In 04′, Threesome

Score: 4/5

A Seat At The Table Review

Solange Knowles has released a album, to my surprise. It is her first album since her 2012 release, True. I was not expecting this and I did not know how to feel.  This is my first experience, listening to a full Solange project.  I’ve heard a few songs from her when I was younger but this my first time really sitting down and digesting a full project.  Did Solange deliver with A Seat At The Table or does she need to go back to the drawing board?

I did not know what to expect and I was thoroughly surprised at what I got.  Throughout the album, I was blown away how much I enjoyed this project.  Solange’s vocals are angelic and lovely, her songwriting abilities are phenomenal.  I never wanted to skip a song, the songs engrosses you and demands your attention.  I never knew Solange could sing this well.  The songs flow well and each songs smoothly transition to one another.

The message is clear that this is a album about black empowerment and black love, a very important sentiment in times like this.  The importance of loving thy self and knowing your worth.   Master P  makes appearances on interludes  preaching about his journey to becoming one of the most influential figures in rap music and how he worked is very inspiring and uplifting, and the interlude breaking down white supremacy and how blackness looked down upon is really crucial.

The guest list was perfect, with the likes of The-Dream, BJ the Chicago Kid, Sampha, Lil Wayne and many more.  To my surprise Lil Wayne had a phenomenal verse.  I don’t remember the last time I heard a Wayne verse that didn’t make me cringe.  Everyone featured contributes and helps make this album flawless, none of the features feels forced or contrived. The production on this album was soothe and relaxing, the instrumentation is another perfect component to this project.  Overall I have been blown away by this album, the message, vocals, production, Instrumentation are all factors that come together to make perfect album with a powerful statement. I was looking for flaws throughout this whole project and I couldn’t find one.

Favorite Tracks: FUBU, Don’t Wish Me Well, Mad, Don’t Touch My Hair

Score: 5/5

This album completely took me away, I did not know what to expect and the experience I got floored me.  This is one of my favorite albums of this year.  What do you think of Seat At The Table? Let me know what you think.  Thank you for reading

Execution of Terence Crutcher

Image result for Terrence Crutcher

Yesterday I was doing homework and after a while I decided to take a break.  The first thing when I logged on my social media is yet another black body lying lifeless on the ground with his hands up.  I quickly conduct research to figure out what happened,  after a few hours of research I quickly found out what I wish would stop happening in America.  Terence Crutcher was on his way home from class when his car broke down, before police officers shot and killed him.  Officers in a helicopter described Crutcher as “a big bad dude”.  You knew nothing about this man but the fact that you perceived him as a scary dude.  My heart goes out to the family of Terrence , he was doing nothing but trying to get help and go on about his business.

The fear of black bodies and the quickness to shoot first and ask questions later is harmful, especially when African-Americans are targeted more so than their white counterparts.  Terence’s twin sister is calling for Justice to be served immediately.  I found it interesting how people who were angry at Colin Kaepernick for sitting during the National Anthem, are doing everything to justify another police officer shooting an unarmed Black person with his hands up. The same  People that felt as though Colin was disrespecting the flag, were the same people who were booing the president , our commander-in-chief.  Why are officers afraid of black people ?  Why are black people treated like a hunted species?

Image result for Terrence Crutcher

Officer Betty Shelby is not in prison , she is on paid administrative leave.  Let that sink in , Betty isn’t in jail , Betty hasn’t even been arrested, she gets to go home to her family and still get pay checks while Terence will never get to see his family again. This isn’t a game , there isn’t any coming back from this . There’s no reset button or cheat code to bring Torrence back.  There is a major problem with race and policing in America, and until we start working together to restructure this system these tragedies will continue to happen. A black man was murdered with his hands up , there is no question  Wake up America, we have a long way to go.

Birds In The Trap Sing Mcknight Album Review

Travis Scott has had quite a year, he has been releasing great singles and has been impressing me with some great features.  His album Rodeo dropped last year and it was one of my favorite albums of last year.  Has Travis improved or did he take a step back with Birds?

Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight.jpg

  1.  the ends- The opening track sets the tone for the album, its dark , moody, massive and ambient.  I was blown away by the production.  Right Away, I can tell that Travis’s songwriting ability has improved.  I hear a heavy Cudi influence on this track, but not to the point where Travis is biting Cudi’s style.  I enjoyed Scott’s verse.  Andre 3000 gives an amazing feature.  I just wish 3 stacks would finally drop an album since he’s been on so many artists album lately.
  2. way back- The transition from the ends to way back is flawless .  The production is hard-hitting and Travis delivers on his verse.  The transition in the middle of song is amazing.  I loved the spacey and airy production and the way Travis rides the beat is interesting.
  3. coordinate-  The track starts with a hilarious piece by Blac Youngsta, but afterwards Scott quickly gets back to the show.  The synths and production is amazing.  Travis almost gets overshadowed by the production.  His lyrics and rapping are great.  One thing about this album Travis ability to craft a full song has gotten much better. Great track.
  4. through the late night-  I have been waiting for a Kid Cudi and Travis Scott collab for a few years now, and I was very happy with the finished product.  These two have great chemistry and mesh well together.  Cudi has been very mediocre with his last few projects and this verse Gives me hope for his upcoming project.  Travis verse was good, but I feel as though Cudi outshined him on this track .
  5. beibs in the trap-  I was excited to see that Nav on this track.  Nav is a Toronto native who I have listening to for a couple of months now.  Nav really stole the show.
  6. sdp interlude- This track is spacey and atmospheric.  The production reminds me of a Clams Casino production.  Travis has become a better song maker and his production has evolved into a new sound.
  7. sweet sweet-  Sweet Sweet continuing the vibe from sdp interlude, Sweet Sweet is a very blissful track, the production is smooth and ambient.  Travis is singing on this track and I was skeptical at first but it has really grown on me.
  8. outside- The dark and moody production on this song is great.  Travis flow and wordplay are amazing.  21 Savage also appears on this track, his verse was a little bit lackluster. I felt he could have written a better verse for the song.
  9. goosebumps- I love everything about this track, except for Kendrick Lamar.  Kendrick does that annoying high-pitched thing with his voice.  Kendrick also tries to sing and it was just god awful.  This track would have been perfect, if Kendrick was taken off .  Other than that I have no problems with the track.
  10. first take –  Travis tries his hand at a love song.  Travis is great on the track but Bryson Tiller steals the show.  Bryson has been giving out great guest verses, I can only anticipate what his next album will be like.
  11. pick up the phone-  Pick up the Phone is the  second single from the album.  I’ve been hooked on the track ever since it came out.  I do wish Travis had a longer verse on the album.  This track fits everyone well, the production is amazing.
  12. lose-I didn’t care for the album at first but it has grown on me.  Travis croons on this track very similar to Cudi on the first Man On The Moon .  The production stole the show .
  13. guidance- This track seems out-of-place.  First the first time on the album it sounds as though Travis is confused as to what he wants this song to be.  Also I don’t see why Roy Wood$ is on this track.  The production is good it just seems as though Travis is lost and trying to ride the wave of new artists doing dance hall music.
  14. wonderful-  wonder is the first single from the album that was released a couple of months ago.  I really think that Travis and The Weeknd have a great chemistry together.  The production fits these two perfectly and it was a dope way to end the album.

Travis has really improved on his sound.  This album seems more cohesive and more to the point than rodeo, which seemed all over the place .  The album takes you on a journey and Travis brings everyone into his world, It doesn’t seem forced or contrived. The production stole the show on this album.  Everyone fits the album, except for Kendrick Lamar verse which I feel is horrendous. Travis brings everyone into his world to make a phenomenal album. But besides the Kendrick feature and guidance, which I didn’t particularly care for, this album is amazing.  Travis has outdone himself.

Score 4.5/5

Favorite tracks: beibz in the trap, way back, coordinate, the ends, pick up the phone

What did you think of the album?  Let me know what you think about the album, I hope everyone is enjoying themselves and being safe.  God Bless.
